July 2007 Steve Marshall reports on the changing face of tribal warfare in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Highland tribes have traditionally used violence to solve disputes - over everything from land control to wives and livestock.
Now, the disputes continue, but the weaponry has changed.
These days many illegal guns have made their way into the hands of tribal fighters.
From bows and arrows to illegal semi-automatic weapons -- the fallout is devastating.
"When he was killed I was left with three kids to look after and it's hard for me", a widow in the Western Highlands tells Marshall.
Tribal fighters confirmed that the drugs for guns trade between PNG and the top end of Australia is also alive and well.
"Some of our businessman who are out there in Australia they buy the guns and send it up to us here", said tribal fighter Moses Kauga.
At a time when PNG voters are going to the polls for the 2007 national elections, Steve Marshall also reveals claims that PNG politicians themselves might be involved in the trade.

The people that are ... The people that are shown fighting this 30 year war are wearing WESTERN CLOTHING or NON TRIBAL ATTIRE. Using machine weaponry created by White people. They're fighting for money & women??? Something about this story isn't sitting well with me. They have been fighting for 30? years, but prior to the war they lived in peace. The same peace the Hutu and Tutsi tribe had for each other before Belgium colonization.

@HDNighster1 Yes, ... @HDNighster1 Yes, I'd recommend you visit there. The reasons for why I think Papua? New Guinea has been damaged shouldn't necessarily stop one from going to visit. If anything, the crime in most of the towns should be the only thing deterring travelers. However, if you've done research and are cognizant of the potential dangers and think you can manage, then enjoy your trip.

The Christian missionaries who have come to the place since its discovery (and still do to this day) by the Western world, probably meant well. But their intentions don't matter because irreversible damage has been done and the place is now as ruined as everywhere else.

@Juggernautishere ... @Juggernautishere Bias in western countries is a given, but bias exists everywhere. As do the flaws of human nature. Everything is tied? back to economic power, which in the end determines military and political power. Power corrupts. Western civilization was just lucky that it came upon the innovations and motivations needed to outpace the rest of the world in this matter. I agree that India will soon be a superpower, but whos to say it won't be them who oppresses the rest of the world?
